Intermission: In Celebration of the Longest Day of the Year

A short list of movies with the word ‘long’ in their title:

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996, Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson)
I love this movie because Geena Davis is a badass in it. She plays a soccer mom with amnesia who begins to regain her memory just in time for the bad guys to come find her.

The Longest Yard (1974, Burt Reynolds)
Not the remake, never the remake! Burt Reynolds before the world knew what an asshole he is. Prisoners versus guards in a football game with a sadistic warden. Billed as a comedy sports drama it definitely weighs more on the side of drama and violence than slapstick humour. Prepare to see pain played out on a prison football field.

The Long Goodbye (1973, Elliot Gould)
Elliot Gould as private dick Philip Marlowe? Yep, it’s as weird as it sounds. Also, it’s the ’70s, so super weird. In a Robert Altman weird-is-good way.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night (1962, Katherine Hepburn)
Eugene O’Neill’s dysfunctional family life—mom’s addicted to morphine and the father and boys are all alcoholics. Maybe don’t watch this if you’re feeling particularly low.

I’ve Loved You So Long (2008, Kristen Scott Thomas)
French drama about a woman who is released after serving a 15-year prison sentence. Her younger sister, who knows almost nothing about why her sister was in prison, takes her in. Kristen Scott Thomas is mesmerizing.

The Long, Hot Summer (1958, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward)
A pretty film with pretty stars. Orson Welles is also it in with one of his many fake noses. The nose slides around quite a bit and sometimes looks green. It’s hot in Mississippi.

The Long Good Friday (1980, Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren)
Man this is a great movie starring two very excellent actors. A British gangster film about a kingpin trying to get one over on the IRA and the American mafia. The ending, the ending!

I know, this is not a comprehensive list. Feel free to list your favourite movies with the word ‘long’ in the title—I’d love to see which ones I’ve missed and should watch.
